Law360 (April 14, 2021, 9:05 PM EDT) — Ponzi king Bernie Madoff’s jailhouse death was all but guaranteed the moment he was sentenced. Before a packed federal courtroom in Manhattan — after the lawyers, victims and Madoff himself had spoken — Judge Denny Chin decided what punishment fit the financial crime of the century: 150 years, the maximum sentence available.

The decision prompted an outburst of cheers from the dozens of victims present. But it was the only joyful moment of a proceeding marked by anguished testimonials from victims, calls for justice from prosecutors, and pleas for mercy by Madoff’s defense team, which had asked for 12 years. Credit Suisse is the ultimate loser of the two scandals – reputationally damaged and holed below the water line. The bank is paying the price of years of flawed management, poor risk awareness. and its self-belief it was still a Tier 1 global player. People moves: facing the funds fallout music, CS changes chairs, and more

Credit Suisse faces some tough choices as it absorbs the extraordinary losses inflicted by the Greensill and Archegos fund fiascos and subsequent ratings hit. On April 6, the firm announced an estimated pre-tax loss of approximately Sfr900 million ($963 million) for the first quarter, including a charge of Sfr4.4 billion ($4.7 billion) in respect of Archegos. At the same time, the firm announced that investment bank CEO Brian Chin and chief risk and compliance officer Lara Warner were stepping down from their roles with immediate effect.

Christian Meissner, co-head of wealth management banking advisory and vice-chair of investment banking, will replace Chin in May. Meissner was previously head of global corporate and investment banking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and earlier co-CEO for EMEA at Lehman Brothers. After Taking $4.7 Billion Hit, Credit Suisse Executives Step Downs

The hits keep coming for investment banking giant Credit Suisse.

The firm announced Tuesday that it expects to take a CHF 4.4 billion (USD $4.7 billion) writedown following losses related to family office Archegos Capital Management’s failure to meet its margin requirements.

Executives are stepping down, and the firm has launched two investigations: one into Archegos, and another into Credit Suisse’s purchase of Greensill Capital’s supply chain debt.
