Michael Burry Reveals Massive Tesla Short, Huge Inflationary Bet

TYLER DURDEN, 17 May 2021

Today is the deadline for 13F filings and while we already know what most of the marquee hedge funds have done during the quarter thanks to previously leaked investor letters (with the notable exception of the Soros Family Office which we learned over the weekend bought some $375MM of the Archegos shares liquidated by its prime brokers in late March), one filing was of particular interest, that of Scion Asset Management’s Michael “Big Short” Burry. And boy were there surprises.

First, there is not even a trace of Burry’s previous interest in Gamestop or any other “Reddit” stocks: it’s safe to assume that all profits there were monetized long ago. In fact, a comparison to Burry’s Q4 2020 13F reveals huge turnover, with just 8 of the fund’s legacy 23 positions as of Dec 31 still on Scion’s Books. Is There A Huge Naked Short on Helium Explorer Avanti Energy?

Editor OilPrice.com, 12 May 2021

Aggressive short sellers, now being targeted by Canadian regulators, are believed to have shorted a shocking 11 million shares of helium miner Avanti Energy in Canada since 2019, most of it in the past two months alone.

That makes Avanti Energy a large target of short-sellers seeking to enrich themselves by destroying companies, even as Canadian regulators are about to tighten the screws on these out-of-control—and naked—shorts. CCIV Stock News: Lucid Motors CCIV shares rebound as weak jobs report means low rates forever!

Ivan Brian, 07 May 2021

No in-depth technical analysis needed here just buy anything and don’t worry about it the Fed is in the market forever. That is the tone of equity markets post a terrible Friday jobs report as yields plunge. CCIV faces some resistance at $20 first before thinking about anything else higher. Chart is still bearish and this may be the case for future session but for now equities are loving zero rates for longer.

CCIV shares continue to retreat as the hype fizzes out of many retail meme stocks while the economy reopens. Traders are no longer confined to their rooms with screens and Robinhood to entertain them. The meme-stock universe is struggling to regain any sort of traction and with multiple ETFs suffering losses, redemptions cannot be too far away. This will put further pressure on the meme-stock segment. Continue reading “Article: CCIV Stock News: Lucid Motors CCIV shares rebound as weak jobs report means low rates forever!”

Big Short: UBS, Top Broker Face $23 Million Claim over Tesla Trades

Miriam Rozen, 26 April 2021

A UBS financial advisor in Madison, Wisconsin who oversees a 35-person team “repeatedly promoted the idea of short selling” shares of the electric car company Tesla, Inc., triggering more than $23 million in losses for four couples—all members of an extended family—and another investor, according to an arbitration claim filed with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

The complaint cites Tesla short-selling recommendations–betting on the stock price’s decline–allegedly made in 2019 and 2020 by Andrew Burish, a 38-year industry veteran who started at UBS in 1984 and leads The Burish Group, one of the firm’s largest and most profitable teams in the Midwest. The team employs 14 advisors and manages more than $4 billion in client assets, according to its website. Self-Driving Car Tech In Crosshairs As Feds Probe Tesla Crash

Linda Chiem, 19 April 2021

A fatal crash in Texas involving a Tesla vehicle purportedly in semi-autonomous mode with no driver behind the wheel has sparked dual federal investigations that will invite sharper regulatory scrutiny of potential gaps in self-driving car technology, even as CEO Elon Musk flatly rejects suggestions that Autopilot was a factor.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which regulates auto safety, as well as the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates transportation accidents, sent teams Monday to investigate the Saturday crash in the Houston suburb of Spring, which left two people dead. Pension Fund Drops Suit Against Tesla Over $1.8B Bond Offer

Rachel Stone, 16 April 2021

A pension fund voluntarily ended its proposed class action against Tesla and its multibillionaire founder, Elon Musk, which claimed the automaker and a group of big banks acting as underwriters misled investors on a $1.8 billion bond offering.

Inter-Local Pension Fund GCC/IBT has bowed out of its securities fraud suit in California federal court following a decision in the Ninth Circuit in March not to rehear a related case, according to a notice filed Thursday. The Reddit revolt: GameStop and the impact of social media on institutional investors

Annabel Smith, 13 April 2021

The Reddit revolution in the US has drawn attention to the potential power that a growing force of retail investors can wield in stock markets when equipped by social media.

Amateur investors have increasingly engaged with retail platforms in the last year, partly due to the pandemic leaving them idol at home, but also due to the newfound onslaught of information through social media and access to the market through retail brokerages and platforms such as Robinhood. ‘Voltswagen’ April Fools Stunt Could Backfire Spectacularly

TooFab Staff, 02 April 2021

Volkswagen said the name change was a joke — but not everybody is laughing.

Volkswagen broke a few April Fools rules with its name change prank this week; namely it not even being April Fools Day, and continuously insisting it wasn’t a prank when called out.

But it may have broken even more serious rules after the stunt caused share prices to soar… leading some business experts to predict an investigation into possible stock market manipulation.

The controversy began on Monday (note: that’s March 29, a good deal short of April 1) when the company “accidentally” leaked an incomplete press release, revealing its intention to change its name to Voltswagen to mark its move towards electric vehicles. Tesla Customers Report Being Charged Double on New Cars

Yaёl Bizouati-Kennedy,  30 March 2021

“Things @Tesla has done for me in the past 2 days: 1) stolen 5 figures directly from my bank account, and that of at least 400 other buyers 2) not delivered the car that was promised yesterday and paid for (TWICE, as it turns out) 3) provided zero contact. Thanks, @elonmusk!” one of these Tesla buyers, Tom Slateery, posted on Twitter.

Slattery told CNBC that on March 24, he received a text from Tesla saying the car he had ordered in January could be delivered to his home in one to three days via the company’s “contactless” delivery service.

The following day, Slattery found his bank account “depleted by nearly $53,000 more than he expected — the sum he agreed to pay for a long-range, all-wheel-drive, 2021 Tesla Model Y. It would be a second Tesla for his family,” according to CNBC. Continue reading “Article: Tesla Customers Report Being Charged Double on New Cars”

Hedge Fund CIO: “Sinners Have Become The System And Will Be Eternally Supported By Policy”

TYLER DURDEN,  28 March 2021

“At some point on the current path, policy makers will attempt to normalize,” said the CIO. We were discussing sequencing, recognizing its centrality to macro trading, investing. “They will start by attempting to taper Fed purchases,” he said, the US central bank currently creating $120bln per month and using it to purchase debt. “Perhaps they signal that they intend to lower the deficit.” But of course, that would only be after they first lift the deficit to fund America’s coming $3trln Recovery Plan. “And at that point, the clock starts ticking,” he said.

“Even if one thinks the current policy path inevitably leads to a substantial inflation, there are enough orthodox policy makers that we can be confident they’ll try to avert that outcome,” continued the same CIO. “So what we need to figure out is how far they’ll let stocks and inflation run before they’re compelled to taper,” he said. “And then we’ll need to judge how long it will take for the economy and/or market to take a deep dive.” Not long. “When they then quickly pivot and aggressively ease, their predicament will be clear for all to see.” Continue reading “Article: Hedge Fund CIO: “Sinners Have Become The System And Will Be Eternally Supported By Policy””

SEC is investigating Japanese investment giant SoftBank for market manipulation

DUNCAN RILEY, 25 March 2021

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating Japanese telecommunications company and investment giant SoftBank Group Corp. for alleged market manipulation.

Founded in 1981, SoftBank holds a significant share — 21.2% as of 2020 of Japan’s mobile phone subscription market — but is best known in the W est for its prolific investment portfolio. The list of companies SoftBank has invested in is too long to list but notable names include Uber Technologies Inc., Didi Chuxing Co. Ltd., Grab Holdings Inc., Nvidia Corp., TikTok owner ByteDance Ltd. and DoorDash Inc.

Along with operating the world’s largest technology-focused venture capital fund, Softbank has a particular interest in ride-hailing companies. Except for Lyft Inc., SoftBank owns significant minority stakes in just about every other company in the market. When Grab purchased Uber’s Southeast Asian arm in 2018, it was a deal between two SoftBank-funded companies. GameStop stock surge lingo: Here’s what Reddit’s WallStreetBets vocabulary means

Katie Conner, 19 March 2021

Reddit’s community, WallStreetBets, is still assisting in the rise of GameStop’s stock, which is currently sitting at $272 per share and even hit an all-time high last week. Reddit users are battling it out with Wall Street to keep GameStop’s stock prices soaring while Wall Street expected a crash. Small investors are using Reddit communities to drive “meme stocks,” causing short sales and https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/shortsqueeze.asp. And it’s not just GameStop. Other companies, like AMC and Nokia, have also been affected by the coordinated surge.

No, this doesn’t mean you should necessarily drop everything and fully invest in the stock of the moment. Some are calling the market manipulation a “Ponzi scheme,” and the stock price will likely even out once the hullabaloo dies down.

In fact, broker TD Ameritrade restricted trading of the GameStop and AMC stocks on Jan. 26 and continues to post an advisory note to clients about market volatility. Trading app Robinhood followed suit on Jan. 27 in response to the runaway growth — the company got itself into trouble by restricting stock trades and will be closely reviewed by the SEC (It’s currently limiting buys on AMC and GameStop stocks). The White House has said it’s monitoring the situation.

GameStop, The Second Surge: Anatomy Of A ‘Gamma Swarm’

George Calhoun, 10 March 2021

GameStop GME -0.7% is not following the script. Despite the confident predictions by almost all the sideline observers (including myself) that the January frenzy in GME shares would end predictably, and badly… this “Stonk” has suddenly surged a second time, embarrassing the conventional wisdom once again.

When GME first erupted in January, I thought it looked like just a clever way to accelerate a conventional short squeeze. (The mechanics of a short squeeze, and the “gamma” accelerant using call options, are described in my previous column.) On that basis, I expected that it would soon deflate and “return to normal.” The battlefield would be littered with the carcasses of small investors who bought at the top. We’d hear the distant sound of champagne popping in the proud towers of Wall Street and Chicago, and the scolds in the press would treat us to another round of lectures on thrift and the Madness of Crowds.

That’s not what happened. The stock did come down as low as $38, but the deflation didn’t stick. As of this moment mid-day (March 10), GME is again trading above $300 a share. [Things are moving fast. See the Update at the end of this piece.]
