Kevin M. Warsh was sworn in as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on February 24, 2006. He left the Board on March 31, 2011. In 1995, Warsh accepted a position with the mergers and acquisitions department at Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York. In  2002, Warsh left his vice president and executive director post at Morgan Stanley & Co. to join the administration for President George W. Bush. He served as special assistant to the president for economic policy and as executive secretary at the National Economic Council. In addition, he advises several companies including serving on the board of directors of United Parcel Service. He graduated from Stanford University(BA), and went on to Harvard Law School and received a law degree in 1995. He also completed coursework in market economics and debt capital markets at Harvard Business School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management.

Subject of Interest

Donald L. Kohn became a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on August 5, 2002. He served as vice chairman from June 23, 2006, to June 23, 2010. He retired from the Board of Governors on September 1, 2010. In 1964, he received a bachelor’s degree from the College of Wooster. He earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Michigan in 1971. He began his career as a financial economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in 1970. In 1975, he came to the Board of Governors, where he was an economist until 1978. After leaving the Board of Governors, Kohn was appointed to the Bank of England’s Interim Financial Policy Committee in September 2011.

William C. Dudley became the 10th president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on January 27, 2009. In that capacity, he served as the vice chairman and a permanent member of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Previously, Dudley served as executive vice president of the Markets Group at the New York Fed, where he also managed the System Open Market Account for the FOMC. Prior to joining the Bank in 2007, he was a partner and managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Company and was the firm’s chief U.S. economist for a decade. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs in 1986, he was a vice president at the former Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. Dudley received his doctorate in economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982 and a bachelor’s degree from New College of Florida in 1974.

John Carroll Williams is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, having also served as President of Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco from 2011-2018. He is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee. Prior to that, he was the executive vice president and director of research at the San Francisco Fed, which he joined in 2002. Williams began his career in 1994 as an economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. In addition, he served as a senior economist in the White House Council of Economic Advisers and as a lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Williams holds a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University, an M.S. degree from the London School of Economics, and an A.B. from the University of California at Berkeley.

Timothy Franz Geithner is a former American central banker who served as the 75th United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Barack Obama, from 2009 to 2013. He was the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 2003 to 2009, following service in the Clinton administration. Since March 2014, he has served as president and managing director of Warburg Pincus, a private equity firm headquartered in New York City.  At the New York Fed, Geithner helped manage crises involving Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and the American International Group. Geithner graduated from Dartmouth College (BA) and Johns Hopkins University (MA).

Michelle W. Bowman took office as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on November 26, 2018, to fill an unexpired term ending January 31, 2020. Prior to her appointment to the Board, Bowman served as the state bank commissioner of Kansas from January 2017 to November 2018. She also served as vice president of Farmers & Drovers Bank in Kansas from 2010 to 2017. Bowman also worked in Washington, D.C. for Senator Bob Dole of Kansas served as a counsel to the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight between 1997 and 2002. In 2002, Bowman became director of congressional and intergovernmental affairs at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. From 2003 to 2004, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and policy advisor to Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge. Bowman received a BS in advertising and journalism from the University of Kansas and a JD from the Washburn University School of Law. She is a member of the New York Bar.

Lael Brainard took office as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on June 16, 2014, to fill an unexpired term ending January 31, 2026. Prior to her appointment to the Board, Dr. Brainard served as Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 2010 to 2013 and counselor to the Secretary of the Treasury in 2009. During this time, she was the U.S. representative to the G-20 Finance Deputies and G-7 Deputies and was a member of the Financial Stability Board. From 2001 to 2008, Dr. Brainard was vice president and the founding director of the Global Economy and Development Program and held the Bernard L. Schwartz Chair at the Brookings Institution. She served as the deputy national economic adviser and deputy assistant to President Clinton. She also served as President Clinton’s personal representative to the G-7/G-8. Previously, Dr. Brainard worked in management consulting at McKinsey & Company. She received a BA from Wesleyan University in 1983. She received an MS and a PhD in economics in 1989 from Harvard University.

Randal K. Quarles took office as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on October 13, 2017, to fill an unexpired term ending on January 31, 2018. He was reappointed to the Board and sworn in on July 23, 2018, for a term ending January 31, 2032. He was sworn in as Vice Chair for Supervision on October 13, 2017. Quarles is also chair of the Financial Stability Board (FSB). Prior to his appointment to the Board, Quarles was founder and managing director of the Cynosure Group, a Utah-based investment firm. Before founding the Cynosure Group, he was a partner at The Carlyle Group.  From September 2005 to November 2006, Quarles served as Under Secretary of the U.S. Deparment of the Treasury for Domestic Finance. Prior to serving as Under Secretary, from April 2002 to August 2005, he was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs. Prior to joining the Treasury, he served, from August 2001 to April 2002, as the U.S. executive director of the International Monetary Fund. He received an AB in philosophy and economics, summa cum laude, from Columbia in 1981 and earned a law degree from the Yale Law School in 1984.

Jerome H. Powell took office as Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on February 5, 2018, for a four-year term. Mr. Powell also serves as Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee. Prior to his appointment to the Board, Powell was a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. From 1997 through 2005, Powell was a partner at The Carlyle Group. Powell served as an Assistant Secretary and as Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury under President George H.W. Bush. Prior to joining the Bush administration, Mr. Powell worked as a lawyer and investment banker in New York City. He received an AB in politics from Princeton University in 1975 and earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1979. While at Georgetown, he was editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Law Journal.

Richard H. Clarida began a four-year term as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on September 17, 2018, and took office as Board member to fill an unexpired term ending January 31, 2022. Prior to his appointment to the Board, Dr. Clarida served as the C. Lowell Harriss Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Columbia University, In addition to his academic experience, Dr. Clarida served as the Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury for Economic Policy from February 2002 until May 2003.  Dr. Clarida also served on the Council of Economic Advisers under President Reagan. From 2006 to 2018, Dr. Clarida served as global strategic advisor with PIMCO and was promoted to managing director in 2015. Dr. Clarida is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Jeremy C. Stein joined the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on May 30, 2012, to fill an unexpired term ending January 31, 2018.  He resigned on May 28, 2014. Stein was born in Chicago. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University (summa cum laude) in 1983 and his doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986. Stein was an assistant professor of finance at the Harvard Business School from 1987 to 1990. He then taught finance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. In 2000, he joined the Harvard faculty. From February to July 2009, Stein served in President Barack Obama’s administration as a senior adviser to the Secretary of the Treasury and on the staff of the National Economic Council.

Stanley Fischer took office as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on May 28, 2014, to fill an unexpired term ending January 31, 2020. He resigned on October 13, 2017. Prior to his appointment to the Board, Dr. Fischer was governor of the Bank of Israel from 2005 through 2013. From February 2002 to April 2005, Dr. Fischer was vice chairman of Citigroup. Dr. Fischer served as the first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund until August 2001. From January 1988 to August 1990, he was the chief economist of the World Bank. Dr. Fischer was born in Lusaka, Zambia, in October 1943. He received his BSc and MSc in economics from the London School of Economics. He received his PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Fed scolded Deutsche Bank for money-laundering protections, new report says

The Federal Reserve recently lambasted Deutsche Bank for loose controls as the firm looks to overhaul its reputation, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The central bank notified Deutsche Bank in a letter that it had ongoing concerns about the firm’s US money-laundering protections, according to the report. The Fed also criticized the company for not resolving issues that led to its “troubled condition” classification in 2017.
